Meet Jen - Mindset & Accountability Coach - Personal Branding Photoshoot, Lancaster Pa

I might be a bit partial but this had to be one of my favorite personal branding photo shoots because my client Jen, happens to be my business bestie!  We've shared plenty of ups, downs, phone calls filled with tears (you know... the big ugly tears that no one can understand) and we soaked up all of the truth bombs Gary V threw out in a 30-minute platform presentation and danced our hearts out with Tony Robbins for 4+ hours!

When Jen came to visit a few weeks ago, we decided she needed a few new headshots for her upcoming website rebrand.  I can't wait to plan her next shoot and I have a feeling we will be at the beach with her puppies, husband, and paddleboards!

Jen has helped me overcome mindset challenges I've experienced and has taught me how to reframe my thoughts and change my story!  I am beyond grateful and blessed to have her in my life personally and professionally.  If mindset and accountability are a struggle for you... know you aren't alone and there are people out there who can help support you on your journey... read Jen's story below and connect with her as she might be the missing link to help you like she has helped me!

Name: Jen VanBarriger
Website / Social Media is currently under construction but you can find me hanging out on facebook ( or mostly on instagram @jenvanbarriger

What is it that you do?
As a mindset & accountability coach, when I’m not adventuring thru life with my husband or cuddling with my amazing boxers, Bailey and Belvedere, I am practicing what I preach. I spend time daily committing to happiness, abundance, joy, healthy boundaries, raising and protecting my vibration and as well as personal growth.

My purpose and messages resonate with my clients and audience causing them to take action, create and achieve goals, and live with the passion to achieve greatness.

What problem/challenge do you help solve for your clients?
I guide my clients to overcome the noise of doubts, fears, and questions we all have in our mind. Together we will uplevel your mindset by showing up 100% unapologetically as you begin living in a space of love and  abundance

What services and/or products do you offer?
As mentioned above, my website is currently under construction as I rebrand. So in the meantime, you can find daily inspiration and motivation from me on insta and facebook while I’m over here cooking up some juicy stuff for the world. Think…personal cheerleader in your back pocket ; )

What is the best advice you've ever been given?
That you can have, do, and be ANYTHING you want in life and the only thing stopping it from happening is the BULLSH*T stories we tell ourselves. Our mind is the most powerful tool we will ever be given and we ALWAYS have the choice to change our mind and our life.

What are three things you couldn't go without?
My husband.
My dogs.
…not really “things” per say, but those three are the very essence of my being. Without each of those, in their own way, I would not be the person I am.

Anything else you'd like to share about WHO YOU ARE & WHAT YOU DO?
I believe gratitude is the #1 thing required in our lives to get us from where we are to where we want to be. When you challenge yourself to be truly grateful for each and every blessing in your life, it is then that the universe begins to conspire and bless you with even more.

I challenge you to keep a gratitude journal for the next 30 days. Each and every day, take notice of 5 - 10 things you are grateful for in the world around you. We often take for granted simple things like fresh air, clean drinking water and a place to sleep, but those are all things to express gratitude for.

Take notice in how your attitude towards things starts to shift. If you miss a day, start the 30 day clock over and keep going!

Should a reader want to learn more about what you have to offer how can they reach you?

Chelsea and Paxton - The bond between mother and son

As many of you know... I am not a baby or child photographer, but on a rare occasion, I'll work with a client who asks me to incorporate a few portraits with their little one.  Now, that I've been in the studio for several months I've been opening up to the idea of working with more kiddos on a regular basis.  (If you haven't seen the birthday theme tween photo shoot I did a few weeks ago, check it out HERE)

I've had the privilege of getting to know Chelsea over the past year and was so happy that she agreed to return to the studio with Paxton for a mommy and son photo shoot.

I also asked Chelsea to share what she has learned in this past year by becoming a first-time mother and a boy mom.

What is life like as a boy mom?  Life as a boy mom is busy, rambunctious, and I can't forget the cuddles. I think all boys are born mamas boys.

Where do you find the coolest outfits for your little man?  Target and I do a lot of consignment shopping also

What did you wish you knew about boys before you became a boy mom?
Oh boy, I think this goes for anyone who is a mom of boys or girls... it's HARD. You will cry, yell, feel guilty, feel like you're not doing anything right. But that love you have is unreal, I wouldn't change any of it for the world.

What's the best advice you could give another mom who is going to have a baby boy? TALK TO OTHER MOMS, you need all the support you can get because you second guess everything you do.

And her last bit of advice: Enjoy every moment, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

15 Years in the Making

“It’s one thing to make a picture of what a person looks like, it’s another thing to make a portrait of who they are.”
— Paul Caponigro
A small collection of the work I/we have been blessed and honored to create during the span of 15 years. It's hard to put into words what the past 15 years have taught me. I(we) have traveled to countries I've never thought I'd visit, I've been introduced to cultures and food I would have never known.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have been entrusted to document their most important milestones; from weddings to babies to senior portraits or helping to bring their business vision to life.

And lastly, to my group of photography friends who have been a shoulder to cry on, a source of inspiration, motivation and would step in at a moments notice to photograph alongside me - each of you is one of the greatest gifts I could have asked for. Thank you - Ruth, Keirnan, Julio, and Jessica.

A special thank you to Robin for introducing me to Cathy and Ron who have helped me bring my dream of having a small studio from a Pinterest board to reality.

None of this would have been possible without my dad. Thank you, Dad, for encouraging me to pick up a camera and document life as I saw it from a young age. To my Mom for giving up space in their home for me to meet clients when I first started my business and to my husband for holding down the fort when I was traveling 36 weekends a year and was barely home in the evenings.

This career has given me more than I ever dreamed of and I can't wait to see what the next 15 years bring.

A Girl's Day Out - Tween Style

"You don't have to be pretty like her.  You can be pretty like you."

Over the weekend the studio was filled with these beautiful little ladies.  They giggled and danced their little hearts out!  I don't think I have giggled this much in a long time.

I can't wait to see what the Fabulous 5 end up doing in the future,I am pretty sure they will do amazing things and hope that every 5 years they make it a tradition to return to the studio for a group photo shoot!

Girl's Day Out Photo Shoots are the perfect way  to celebrate the bond you have with your sisters, cousins, or best friends.  We can book out the entire studio for the afternoon and have the ultimate girl's day complete with hair, makeup and wardrobe styling.  After your photo shoot plan to continue the girl's day with dinner and drinks or in this case ----> a trip to Froyo!

Girl's Day Out Photo Shoots are an amazing birthday party alternative.  We can book out the studio for a few hours, bring in a hairstylist to add a bit of curl or braids to the girls hair and finish the look with a bit of lip gloss.  Each photo shoot is limited to 5 girls and includes 3 photos from the day (a group photo, a photo with the birthday girl, and an individual photo) Use the contact form below to inquire about availability.

Embracing Beauty - for him and you

I've joked with Leighanne that she is my spirit animal.   She is the type of person you can get lost in a conversation with and when you end the conversation no matter the topic you feel better, encouraged, supported, and inspired.  Leighanne's passion is helping women glow from within.  She has an incredible touch as an Esthetician and her mantra is "What's good for the skin is good for the soul."

When Leighanne approached me about a boudoir photo shoot - I was honored that she asked me to help bring her vision to life.  Rather than gift her husband with another tie or electronic for his birthday she wanted to create a keepsake portrait to hang in their bedroom.

Leighanne put a lot of thought into the look and feel of the photoshoot to push her beyond her comfort zone, but also remain true to herself and I fully believe we made that happen.

Leighanne is a mom of two and an Esthetician so taking time out of her busy schedule for a photo shoot was also a gift to herself - a chance to reclaim her personal identity from being wife, mother, and service provider.

We created a mixture of glamour inspired portraits with a boudoir flare using cozy blankets and white sheets.

If you are ready to EMBRACE YOUR OWN DEFINITION OF BEAUTY - I'd love to help you bring your photo shoot to life!

I reached out to a Lancaster, PA up and coming make-up artist, Erica Colon, of Erica Colon Makeup Artistry, to share 5 Summer Makeup Must Have's.  Scroll down to read Erica's tips to have flawless summer skin.

  • At least 30 broad spectrum to protect from both uva & uvb.

#2 Don't Skip Moisturizer.

  • Even if you are oily skin type. If you are feeling like your regular moisturizer is to heavy, look for a light moisturizer.

#3 Use a Facial Spray

  • A facial spray will be refreshing, cooling and yet hydrating boost throughout the day.

#4 Waterproof Mascara

  • Even if you don't plan on dancing in the rain, going swimming or crying, waterproof mascara is the better option in the summer because you tend to sweat more which can make regular mascara smudge

#5 Try a BB or CC

  • BB or CC is a great alternative to foundation. It's lighter feeling, yet you still get the coverage of a decent foundation. It can replace both your moisturizer and foundation. I would still use an SPF with it.

BONUS: If you don't want to buy a separate BB/CC cream (tinted moisturizer) Mix your favorite foundation with your moisturizer at a 1 to 1 ratio and viola!!

As a young girl, I always dreamed of having a studio space to create and share my vision with the world.  When the opportunity presented itself to bring a studio space to life I knew it was now or never.  This space melts my heart and brings a creative energy to life inside me that I can hardly explain.

I love how this space has evolved from a dab old office space into a creative safe haven for my clients and myself.

If I had to guess the studio is just around 300 - 350 square feet with everything having multiple uses from a couch that converts to a bed, a makeup bar that doubles a display shelf, a desk that is used for function and as a prop.  It's like being in a tiny house complete with bathroom and shower!

I'd love for you to see the studio in person and to chat about how we can bring your dream photo shoot to life.

- Anne Kline

It's really important to spend a bit of time prior to your photo shoot putting together your outfits and accessories - (a.ka. a friendly reminder not to do this the night before).

Pick your favorite 5 - 6 outfits with accessories and determine if the outfits you have selected are right for the photo shoot you've scheduled.  Especially if you are scheduling a personal branding photo shoot - you want to make sure that you are communicating who you are and what you do through the clothing and accessories that you pick.

Flowy oversized tops rarely look good in a photo and can add extra unwanted volume.  Stick to pieces that are a bit more form fitting.  Tailored and freshly pressed clothing rarely goes out of style!

Simple pieces like scarves, blazers, vests, and jackets can quickly transform an outfit.

Don't forget that the locations you select will impact the wardrobe that you should select. Example: avoid leather pants and a sassy top with heels if the location you are selecting is an open field.  The leather pants, top, and heels would be better suited for an urban or studio setting.

One last thing, you'll receive a copy of my fashion inspiration guide to help you plan for your photo shoot and should you need to schedule a wardrobe styling session with me, I'd be happy to do so.

Oh, and it's completely okay to break the fashion rules - you can pair a cocktail dress with booties or pair ripped skinny jeans with a band t-shirt and heels.   Remember, some rules are made to be broken.

how body image keeps me behind the camera - can you relate?

I want to be radically transparent for a moment to talk about body image and how it keeps so many women, including myself, behind the camera rather than celebrating our own definition of beauty.

We live in a world of over photoshopping, perfectly styled outfits, hair, makeup and this crazy idea of perfection.  It's causing so many women (and men) to struggle with body image and feel a need to compete with each other even if we think we aren't.

Sadly, I've fallen victim to this myself starting back in my 20's when my business was at its peak. Professionally I was riding cloud 9 but personally, I was sinking fast in quicksand.  I wasn't healthy, my skin was a wreck, and let's be honest my weight was out of control.  I'd compare myself to the stunning bridesmaids or guests at the weddings I was photographing.

I'd do whatever I could to fade into the background while I was photographing weddings, I rocked all black like it was no one's business and did my best to conceal my weight gain.  Thankfully, lugging around a lot of camera equipment can help buffer problem spots.

My wake up call came in the mail mid to late 2009 when a client had sent me this photo. Taken during the cocktail hour by a guest. I was mortified at the girl staring back at me in the photo. I couldn't believe I let myself get to this point.  I was an athlete in high school, I had a successful business, but I was in denial about my health.

Bare with me, this post is about embracing who you are... I promise I am getting there. What I came to learn is that I gave food way too much control over my life and in turn my poor body image continued to multiple.  It wasn't until I had a true heart to heart with myself that something needed to change.  So... I enlisted help from a coach to help me transform my eating habits and in turn, I lost weight to the tune of 60+ pounds.

Rather than embracing who I was during this time in my life, I was filling my mind and body with so much negative self-talk and truthfully self-hate, that it is no wonder I packed on MORE pounds.  In order for me to embrace my own definition of beauty... I had to find it from within.  This is different for everyone, but I found myself on the floor of the gym covered in sweat, tears, and a bit of blood.  Or in the kitchen where I completely restructured my/our diet to give me energy rather than deplete me.

And because I am being transparent - Recently, I have felt myself slipping back into my old habits with the relaunch and expansion of the business.  Trading healthy eating and morning workouts for blogging, catching up on edits, or responding to client emails.

So.... what I have decided to do is embrace my own definition of beauty with a photo shoot of my own scheduled for June 4th.  Yikes, I am putting it out there.  More than likely I won't have 6-pack ab's or a popping booty, but I will have a healthy glow and so much confidence about myself because I fully intend to embrace who I am at this photo shoot.  Love handles and all.

Here's my challenge to you... EMBRACE YOUR OWN DEFINITION OF BEAUTY TODAY!  And if you aren't ready yet... what can you do today so you can embrace your beauty tomorrow?

One final thing... don't hide behind the camera because you aren't happy with how you look at this moment in time.  If something god forbid happens to you, your loved ones aren't going to care about your weight, gray roots popping through, or any other ego induced idea you think about yourself. Instead, your loved ones will cling to the memories that accompany those photos - not the thoughts your ego is pumping into your mind.

What I learned about fashion this weekend

Backstory - I am a lover of fashion and would be lying if I didn't say that I am a sucker for behind the scene videos of photo shoots, playing dress up, wearing heels, and having my hair and makeup done.  Sadly, along the way - I transitioned to the athleisure movement and this weekend I had a wake-up call that I needed a makeover.  I couldn't handle another day of running errands in my workout gear.

The lessons learned this weekend are so timely and perfect for those planning an upcoming photo shoot, attending events, or simply wanting to update their daily wardrobe.

DITCH THE SWEATPANTS (aka - athleisure)

If you aren't familiar with Uncle Karl (Karl Lagerfeld)- allow me to introduce to you one of the greatest designers, photographers, and voices in the fashion world.

He said it best - "Sweatpants are a sign of defeat."

I couldn't agree more - unless you are a personal trainer, yoga instructor, or athlete - leave the sweats at home even if you are running errands.  Tell me this hasn't happened to you... you are out running errands in your baggy sweats when you run into a client, old boyfriend, co-worker, or boss.  Ugh.. it happened to all of us at one point in time.

Here are my personal exceptions to this rule - if you are covered in dirt / mud from doing yard work and you need to run to a home improvement store - other than that... ditch the athleisure.

If you can't move, breathe, or are self-conscious about an article of clothing do not buy it, keep it or attempt to make it work - especially for a photo shoot.  Remember, you aren't a paid model and required to dress a specific way.  Should you find a skirt, dress, pants, or top that you love, but needs to be altered find a tailor and have your clothes altered.  You'll be amazed at how the clothes look and fit you once altered.

Tip: rather than throw away good quality clothing that you no longer like - host a clothing swap with your girlfriends, take your clothing to a consignment shop or donate.

Admittedly, I have visions of wearing flowy, floral boho styled clothing with Birkenstocks looking like I stepped out of Coachella, but that isn't me.  I am not a bright color, loud print, or flowy floral girl.   Just because magazines and Instagram are flooding your mind with these trends doesn't mean they are right for you.  Stick with pieces that you like, work with your body, and can become an extension of you rather than saying later: "What in the hell was I thinking?"

source:  pinterest:

I love wearing black - it's slimming, timeless, and can be paired with so many pieces.  One of my goals is to create a minimalistic closet with pieces that can easily transition to make multiple looks.  I took a page from Parisian fashion on this one.  Black is my primary color and I'll mix grey, white, and olive green to add variations to my outfits.

Okay... I hate doing laundry and the thought of using an iron makes me want to cry - but to pull off a polished look - you need to have pressed clothing.  The wrinkled shirt from the corner of your bedroom isn't going to work - especially for a job interview or your first day at your internship.

A tip I recently learned: Fold and/or iron while watching your favorite binge-worthy Netflix's or Amazon show.  It might make the process a little less dreadful.

If you are opting for a monochromatic style - add pops of color with your accessories; scarves, hats, earrings, necklace, or a large cuff bracelet.

  1. Your shoes and purse should match

  2. Minimal makeup is key - add a bright red lip for a pop of color

  3. Pick and choose which accessories you wear - less is more

  4. Always wear heels with jeans

  5. Manicured nails are key - avoid neon colors - red is always a winner
